Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) in Pune

Pune Cardiac Centre provides Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) in Pune, performed by Dr. Smruti Hindaria, Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeon and Bypass Surgeon in Pune (MBBS, MS, MCh CVTS – Mumbai; Reg. No. 2009/03/1024).

In MICS, sometimes called keyhole heart surgery, the surgeon reaches the heart through small incisions between the ribs instead of a full opening of the breastbone. For suitable patients, this can mean less blood loss, a smaller scar and a shorter hospital stay than conventional open-heart surgery. MICS is not suitable for every patient, and the decision depends on a detailed cardiac evaluation.

Care at the clinic includes pre-surgical evaluation, surgical planning, post-operative follow-up and rehabilitation guidance.

What Is Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery?

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) is a modern surgical technique used to treat a range of heart conditions through small incision heart surgery rather than the traditional full sternotomy (large chest incision). Specialized instruments, enhanced visualization, and in select cases robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery, allow the surgeon to access and repair the heart allow the surgeon to operate on the heart without a full sternotomy

MICS is used across several procedures, including valve repair, bypass surgery, and structural heart defect correction, and is suitable for carefully selected patients following a detailed cardiac evaluation.

Before and After MICS at Pune Cardiac Centre

Evaluation for suitability

Echocardiography, angiography and other reports are reviewed to decide whether MICS or conventional surgery is appropriate

Hospital-based surgery

MICS is performed at Heartmate Clinic with robotic assistance where it is suitable.

Pain management and rehabilitation

Pain relief after surgery, follow-up visits and guidance on resuming activity.

Written cost estimate

A cost estimate is shared before surgery, based on the procedure, hospital and length of stay.

Conditions Treated

Conditions Treated with Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

MICS may be an option for selected patients with the following conditions

  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • Mitral valve disease (leakage or narrowing)
  • Aortic valve disease
  • Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
  • Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) Closure
  • Atrial fibrillation (surgical ablation, when done with valve surgery)

Our Procedures

Types of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery includes a variety of advanced procedures performed through small incisions, allowing effective treatment of heart conditions with reduced pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring.

Minimally Invasive Heart Valve Surgery

Repair or replacement of the mitral, aortic or tricuspid valve through a small incision in the chest.

Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass

Creates an alternative pathway around blocked coronary arteries using small incisions and specialized technique, often with shorter hospital stays for selected patients.

Minimally Invasive ASD Closure

Surgical closure of a hole between the heart’s upper chambers through a small incision, for patients in whom device closure is not suitable

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Tumor Surgery

Removal of heart tumours such as myxoma through a smaller incision, where the tumour’s size and position allow.

Benefits

Possible Benefits of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

ompared with conventional open-heart surgery, MICS may offer the following for suitable patients

  • Smaller Incisions — requires only small surgical openings, resulting in less tissue damage and minimal scarring.
  • Reduced Pain and Discomfort — causes less post-operative pain compared to traditional open-heart surgery.
  • Faster Recovery — helps patients return to normal daily activities more quickly.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay — many patients spend less time in the hospital after the procedure.
  • Lower Risk of Infection — smaller incisions reduce exposure and may decrease the risk of surgical site infections.
  • Less Blood Loss — advanced surgical techniques help minimize bleeding during the operation.
  • Improved Cosmetic Results — smaller scars provide a more aesthetically pleasing appearance after healing.
  • Quicker Return to Work — enables many patients to resume professional and personal responsibilities sooner.

Risks and Limitations of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Like all heart surgery, MICS carries risks, including bleeding, infection, irregular heartbeat, stroke, kidney problems and, rarely, death. In some cases the surgeon may need to convert to conventional open surgery during the operation for safety. MICS may not be suitable for patients with multiple blocked arteries, previous chest surgery, certain lung conditions or complex anatomy. Your surgeon will explain your individual risks before you decide.

Cost of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in Pune

The cost of minimally invasive heart surgery in Pune depends on the condition being treated, the type of procedure, the hospital and room category, the length of stay and any tests required. After evaluation, the clinic provides a written cost estimate. Health insurance claims and EMI options through finance providers may be available, subject to eligibility.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

It is heart surgery performed through small incisions between the ribs instead of a full opening of the breastbone (sternotomy). It is used for selected valve, bypass, ASD and tumour operations.

Selected patients with mitral, aortic or tricuspid valve disease, coronary artery disease, atrial septal defect or cardiac tumours may be suitable, depending on a detailed evaluation.

In traditional surgery, the breastbone is divided to reach the heart. In MICS, the heart is reached through a small incision between the ribs. The repair itself is similar. The main differences are the size of the incision and the recovery, and suitability depends on the patient.

It depends on your condition, heart anatomy, number of blockages, lung function, previous chest surgery, age and overall health. Your surgeon will decide after reviewing your echocardiography, angiography and CT scans where needed.

The hospital stay is usually about [4–6] days. Many patients return to light activities within 2–3 weeks, but recovery varies from person to person.

Risks include bleeding, infection, irregular heartbeat, stroke, kidney problems and, rarely, death. Sometimes the surgeon has to convert to conventional open surgery during the operation. Your individual risk will be discussed before surgery.

The cost depends on the procedure, the hospital, the room category and the length of stay. A written cost estimate is provided after evaluation.

Most health insurance policies cover heart surgery, subject to policy terms. EMI options through finance providers may also be available. Ask the clinic for current details.

Both use small incisions. In robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon controls robotic instruments from a console, which gives a magnified 3D view. Which approach is suitable depends on the procedure and the patient.

Consultations are available at both the Pune (Jangali Maharaj Road) and Pimpri Chinchwad clinics. Surgery is performed at [Pune Cardiac Center]. Call +91 70667 16671
